Bani Walid –The wave of popular rejection has escalated in a number of Libyan cities to the proposal to establish what is known as the “Central Region Region,” amid fears of its repercussions on the country’s unity, at a time when those in charge of the initiative confirm that its goal is limited to enhancing coordination and integration between the participating municipalities.
The city of Bani Walid witnessed the latest chapter of this controversy, after protesters closed the municipal headquarters in protest against its joining the project launched by the heads of nine municipalities, which include Misrata, Al-Khoms, Zliten, Bani Walid, Tarhuna, Tininai, Al-Mardoum, Masalata, and Qasr Al-Akhyar.
The announcement of the initiative sparked widespread debate in political and social circles, as its opponents believe that it may open the door to new administrative arrangements that raise sensitivities related to regionalism and division, while its supporters assert that it aims to improve services and enhance cooperation between municipalities.
In a related context, the head of the Social Council of the Warfalla Tribes, Aguila El Gamal, announced his rejection of the project, expressing his reservations about the idea of regions in the current circumstance, and stressing the importance of strengthening national cohesion and preserving the unity of state institutions.
He also indicated that there are consultations between the various concerned parties and municipalities in order to contain differences and search for solutions that guarantee social stability and avoid further tension.
For its part, the municipality of Bani Walid affirmed respect for the right of citizens to peacefully express their opinions, stressing the need to maintain civil peace, protect public and private property, and continue dialogue with social and youth activists and notables to bring viewpoints closer together.
This controversy comes in light of the continuing debate on ways to achieve local development and improve services in various Libyan cities, amid demands for the necessity of addressing these challenges through state institutions and approved legal frameworks, in a way that preserves the country’s unity and enhances stability.
