Ankara– The American President announcedDonald TrumpOn Wednesday, the memorandum of understanding with Iran “has expired,” in the latest indication of the collapse of the diplomatic track between Washington and Tehran, on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
During his meeting with the Secretary-General of NATO, Trump said that the United States “wasted a lot of time” dealing with Iran, adding:“I don’t want to deal with the Iranians.. We have wasted a long time, and we must do our job.”.
The US President launched a sharp attack on the Iranian leadership, describing it as“Evil and sick people”, stressing that Washington will not allow Tehran to possess a nuclear weapon, and indicating that diplomacy is no longer a feasible option in light of recent developments.
Trump’s statements come after the escalation of the military confrontation between the two countries, as the US Army announced the implementation of strikes targeting more than80 goals inside Iran, in response to attacks on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington attributed to Tehran.
In return, he declaredIranian Revolutionary GuardDozens of American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait were targeted, while the Iranian armed forces warned that any country that allows its territory or bases to be used to launch American attacks on Iran will be considered a “legitimate target.”
For his part, the Iranian President confirmed: Masoud BazeshkianHis country will continue to defend its rights and interests, at a time when relations between Tehran and Washington are witnessing an unprecedented escalation that raises fears of a widening confrontation in the region.Trump’s statements, in which he considered that the memorandum of understanding with Iran had become a thing of the past, reflected a clear shift in the position of the American administration, amid escalating military tension and declining chances of resuming any negotiating path between the two sides.
