Tripoli –The Libyan capital, Tripoli, is witnessing an expansion in the scope of protests and civil disobedience, with new areas joining the movements demanding the overthrow of the National Unity Government, against the backdrop of the continuing crisis of electricity outages and the deterioration of basic services.
Local coordination and movements, including the Movement of the Sons of Tajoura and the Movement of the Sons of Souq Al-Jumaa, announced their joining of civil disobedience, stressing that the protests will continue to demand a change of governments in the east and west of the country, while emphasizing the peacefulness of the movements and not targeting citizens or closing roads in their first phase.
The Friday Market area witnessed the closure of a number of public institutions and headquarters, including the headquarters of the telecommunications companies Libyana and Al-Madar, in addition to branches of the Central Bank of Libya, while popular movements called on citizens to participate in peaceful protests.
The movements extended to other areas of the capital, where protesters closed a number of main axes using burning tires. The Ain Zara area also witnessed protests and the closure of some roads, at a time when the city of Zawiya announced its joining the wave of civil disobedience.
Local media reported that an armed group affiliated with the government opened fire to disperse protesters in the Janzour area, without official confirmation of any casualties, while circulating clips showed protesters closing the vicinity of the Foreign Ministry headquarters in an escalatory step.
These protests come weeks after the escalation of the power outage crisis, before the protesters’ demands expanded to include holding those responsible for corruption accountable and improving public services, considering that mismanagement and corruption have contributed to worsening living conditions.
In the first official comment, the Protection and Security Force of the Prime Minister’s Office of the Government of National Unity confirmed that protecting citizens and preserving state institutions is a priority, stressing that it will deal in accordance with the law with any actions that affect public security or property, while stressing that freedom of expression is guaranteed as long as it takes place in a peaceful framework.
