Rabat –The President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation called forFawzi LakjaaHe called for adopting a clear strategy to qualify the local player, stressing the need to reduce the gap between the national championship and the national teams, during a meeting held on Monday with the coaches of the clubs of the first and second divisions of the professional championship in preparation for the new football season.
Lakjaa stressed that the results of the national teams in recent years reveal the limited presence of national championship players, pointing out that the first team in the last World Cup finals included only two reserve goalkeepers from the local league, without the presence of midfield or attack players, while in the past the national championship was the main source of nutrition for the team.
He explained that the same situation is repeated in various age groups, including the under-23 team and the under-17 national team, where the majority of members come from outside the local system, with the exception of a limited number of players coming from some clubs or academies.
The university president stressed that this reality imposes a collective responsibility on the various actors in national football, calling for addressing the constraints facing the clubs, whether related to financial conditions, conflicts, or the weakness of giving opportunities to emerging talents, in a way that contributes to enhancing the presence of the local player within the national teams.
Lakjaa pointed out that the next stage, with the approaching organization of the 2030 World Cup in partnership between Morocco, Spain and Portugal, requires developing a road map to develop the national championship, raise the quality of training, and prepare players capable of competing at the highest levels.
For his part, the director of technical development at the university, Fathi Gamal, explained that the training programs provided an important base of players, but the absence of opportunities to participate with clubs remains one of the most prominent challenges, pointing out that most talents do not get enough playing minutes in the first and second sections.
He added that the university intends to hold a meeting with club presidents to involve them in this project, with the aim of providing an environment that helps integrate young players, considering that the success of the training system depends on giving local talents real opportunities to develop within the national championship.
