Addis Ababa– Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, confirmed that Moscow continues to support African efforts aimed at addressing the crises taking place on the continent, most notably the Libyan crisis, stressing his country’s adherence to the principle of“African Solutions to African Problems”.
Lavrov’s statements came on Thursday during a press conference in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, following consultations with the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, which dealt with a number of regional files, including the situation in Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, the Sahel and Sahara region, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region.
The Russian Foreign Minister explained that his country shares with the African Union concerns about the security and political developments taking place in several African countries, stressing Moscow’s continued support for the initiatives led by African countries to resolve crises, while calling on the international community to support these efforts instead of imposing solutions from outside the continent.
In the same context, Russia and the African Union Commission expressed, in a joint statement issued following the consultations, their confidence thatRussian-African SummitThe upcoming event, scheduled to be held in Moscow on MondayNext October 28 and 29It will constitute a new station to enhance relations and partnership between the two sides.
Lavrov also indicated that Russia intends to continue expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation with African countries, explaining that the volume of trade exchange between Moscow and the countries of the continent has exceeded27 billion dollarsAt the end of last year.
