High Commission for Planning: Poverty has declined in Morocco over a decade, but it remains a “rural phenomenon”

The High Commission for Planning revealed, on Thursday, a significant decline in the number of poor people in Morocco, as it decreased from 4 million people in 2014 to 2.5 million in 2024, according to the results of a recent study on the poverty map in the Kingdom.

The study, which was based on data from the General Population Census in the years 2014 and 2024, showed that the percentage of the population in poverty declined from 11.9% to 6.8% during the same period, recording a general improvement in indicators of decent living.

Despite this decline, poverty in Morocco still has a clear rural character, as the study showed that about 72% of the poor live in rural areas in 2024, compared to 79% in 2014.

The report also highlighted that the poverty rate in rural areas decreased from 23.6% to 13.1% during the last decade, but it still exceeds the rate recorded in urban areas by more than four times, as the latter reached 3% in 2024 compared to 4.1% in 2014.

The delegation stressed that the “multidimensional poverty” approach is not limited only to weak purchasing power, but also includes difficulties in accessing basic services, especially education, health, and housing conditions, considering that these indicators constitute existing challenges in the path of social development in Morocco.
