Akhannouch’s failure to run for a third term as head of the “Ahrar” party opens a wide political debate ahead of the electoral elections

In a political context characterized by early preparation for upcoming legislative dues, the Prime Minister announcedAziz AkhannouchHe did not run for a third term at the head of theparty National Rally of LiberalsIn a move that sparked widespread debate within political and party circles.

This announcement came during a meeting of the party’s political bureau, where Akhannouch confirmed his adherence to the decision not to run again, and rejected internal proposals that called for amending the party’s statute in order to extend the number of permitted terms, stressing that the party’s presidency remains limited to only two terms, and that his decision is “final and irreversible.”

This development comes about ten years after Akhannouch assumed leadership of the party since 2016, a phase that witnessed an organizational restructuring of the National Rally of Independents, culminating in its topping in the results of the 2021 legislative elections, the formation of the current government, and then Akhannouch’s re-election as Secretary-General of the party for a second term in 2022.

As part of managing this transitional phase, the party announced the holding of an extraordinary conference on February 7, 2026 in the city of El Jadida. It also opened the door for nominations for the presidency of the party between January 12 and 21 of this year at the level of the central administration in Rabat.

In parallel, the Liberal Political Bureau stressed its continued support for Aziz Akhannouch in his duties as head of government, stressing the party’s support for the government majority through its various structures, with the aim of enabling the government to complete the implementation of its programs and commitments until the end of its constitutional term.

Those who follow this decision link the timing of this decision to the current political and social context, especially with the approaching legislative elections expected next September, and the public debate, criticism, and social protests that accompanied the previous stage, some of which were directed at government policies and its president.

Observers believe that the step of not running for a third term opens the door to rearranging the balance of power within the National Rally of Liberals, and the emergence of new leaders who may lead the party in the next stage, at a time when the future of this decision and its electoral and political repercussions remain the subject of follow-up and discussion within the national party scene.
