A veterinary medicine crisis threatens livestock in Tunisia.. Cow breeders in Jendouba launch a distress call

Jendouba –Cow breeders in the state of Jendouba warned of the repercussions of the severe shortage of veterinary medicines, calling on the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries and the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to provide the necessary treatments to protect the herd, especially in light of the high heat wave that the country is witnessing.

A number of breeders confirmed that many veterinary pharmacies suffer from a shortage or absence of basic types of medicine, at a time when recorded diseases within the herd require rapid intervention to avoid worsening losses.

For her part, a member of the Executive Office of the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries in Jendouba, Sherifa El-Belaili, explained that preserving livestock and ensuring the continuity of milk and red meat production requires the provision of veterinary medicines, considering that their absence threatens the herd and increases the suffering of breeders.

A veterinarian pointed out that the lack of medications for treating mastitis, in addition to ointments and medications associated with the summer season, may lead to serious complications in cows, sheep, and goats, and the absence of necessary calcium supplements during birth may pose a threat to the lives of cows.

In turn, the head of the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries in Jendouba, Lotfi Al-Jamazi, expressed his concern about the continuation of this situation, noting that cases of death had been recorded in sheep and goats, and to a lesser extent in cows, calling on the authorities to intervene urgently to provide medicines and protect livestock from further losses.
