Tunisia –The “Economic Situation (May 2026)” report issued by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines revealed that natural gas resources in Tunisia declined by 14% by the end of May 2026, settling at 698 thousand tons of oil equivalent, as a result of the decrease in the tax royalty for the transit of Algerian gas, despite recording relative stability in national production.
The report indicated that the Nawara and Sharqi fields recorded an increase in production by 10% and 26%, respectively, and commercial gas production in the south increased by 5%, while the production of the Hasdrubal field decreased by 17%, which affected the total national resources.
The Observatory indicated that the tax royalty resulting from the transit of Algerian gas decreased by 33% compared to the same period in the year 2025, to reach 225 thousand tons of oil equivalent, while about 87% of these quantities were directed to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Stag), while the file of exceeding the withdrawal quantities recorded during the year 2025, which amounted to 240 million cubic meters, continues to be addressed.
In contrast, Tunisia’s purchases of Algerian gas increased by 8%, reaching 1,143 thousand tons of oil equivalent, while the national supply and demand for natural gas remained almost stable at about 1.8 million tons of oil equivalent.
The report confirms that the electricity production sector is still the main consumer of natural gas, having accounted for 65% of the total demand, at a time when electricity production in Tunisia depends on gas by approximately 91%, which reflects the continued fragility of the energy system in the face of any decline in local resources.
This development comes at a time when, in recent days, Tunisia has been facing disruptions in the electrical supply and frequent outages in a number of regions, which has brought back to the forefront the debate on energy security, and the necessity of diversifying production sources and accelerating investment in renewable energies to reduce the heavy reliance on natural gas, especially imported gas.
