Those in charge of the initiative explained that this step comes in the context of an ongoing public debate about the impact of the extra hour on the daily lives of citizens, noting that the currently adopted time poses problems related to health, sleep, and concentration, in addition to its repercussions on schooling and daily organization, especially during certain periods of the year.
The campaign confirmed that the petition is based on the laws regulating the submission of citizen petitions and initiatives, as an institutional means that allows citizens to contribute to directingPublic policies.
The goal of the petition: to influence public decision
This initiative aims to push towards the re-adoption of the “legal clock” that is compatible with the social specificities of the Kingdom, while seeking to achieve a balance between administrative time and social time, in harmony with the citizens’ lifestyle.
The initiative’s owners also stressed that this step represents a responsible and organized form of civil expression, far from any unframed forms of protest.
A call for broad mobilization and crossing the legal threshold The campaign called on citizens registered in the electoral lists to engage extensively in signing the petition and sharing it widely, in order to reach the quorum that allows it to be presented to the competent authorities.
According to available data, the number of signatures exceeded 300,000, which reflects an unprecedented level of mobilization around this file.
Political criticism: “imposed choice” and lack of evaluation
In the same context, the parliamentary representative for the Federation of the Democratic Left, Fatima Al-Zahraa Al-Tamani, criticized the continuation of the working time (GMT + 1), considering that it is no longer just a technical measure, but rather has turned into a daily political decision that directly affects citizens.
She pointed out, in a blog post on social media, the absence of a real public debate and a transparent evaluation of the effects of this decision, despite warnings related to its impact on health, sleep, and concentration, as well as on the academic path.
Controversy over economic justifications
The Parliament also questioned the feasibility of the economic justifications presented, especially with regard to energy saving, considering that international experiences, including recommendations issued by the European Parliament, showed the limited impact of changing the clock in this aspect.
She added that the absence of accurate data and detailed official reports raises questions about the feasibility of continuing at this time, compared to its social cost.
