Tunisia: Rached Ghannouchi sentenced to 20 years in prison in the case of “conspiracy against state security”

Tunisia – My Press

On the evening of Tuesday, April 15, 2026, a Tunisian court ruled to imprison the leader of the Ennahda movement, Rached Ghannouchi, for 20 years, on the grounds of pursuing him in a case related to “conspiracy against state security,” linked to what is known in the media as “Ramadan conspiracies.”

The same ruling included leaders of the movement, Youssef Al-Nouri and Ahmed Al-Mashriqi, while the court issued similar rulings against three other defendants located outside the country, including former Foreign Minister Rafik Bouchlaka, according to what local media sources reported.

The court also ruled to imprison three other followers on release for three years, in the context of the same file.

The chapters of this case go back to a political symposium organized by opposition parties during the month of Ramadan in the year 2023, during which Ghannouchi addressed what he considered the dangers of “political exclusion,” in the context of the controversy existing at the time about the political scene in Tunisia.

Ghannouchi, who is 84 years old, has been involved in several judicial files since his imprisonment in April 2023, including cases related to terrorism, financial corruption, and conspiracy against state security, noting that he boycotted a number of his trial sessions.

According to available data, the total sentences issued against him to date exceed 70 years in prison.

On the other hand, the Ennahda Movement and a number of opposition components consider these prosecutions to be of a political nature, while the Tunisian authorities confirm that judicial procedures are carried out within the framework of respect for the law and state institutions.
