Rabat –Moroccan unions confronted the new government with demands to improve wages, purchasing power, and settle outstanding issues, warning of the possibility of a return of protests in vital sectors, especially health and education, if the delay in implementing the agreements signed with the previous government continued.

In the health sector, the National Union of Health, affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labor, called for the payment of late compensation for guarding, retroactively, starting from January 1, 2024, calling on the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to intervene to ensure the implementation of agreements and the settlement of dues according to the correct calculation method. It also threatened to engage in a protest program if the demands of workers in the health institutions concerned were not met.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Moroccan Labor Union, Melody Mukharik, considered that raising social demands with the beginning of the work of the new government is normal, in light of the high costs of living and the decline in purchasing power. He stressed that evaluating the government’s performance remains premature, pending the practical measures it will take to respond to the demands of workers in the public and private sectors.

In the education sector, the Secretary General of the National Education Union, Yunus Verashin, warned of the possibility of renewed protests due to the faltering implementation of the previous government’s commitments and the failure to settle a number of outstanding issues. He stressed the need to launch a responsible and productive social dialogue that leads to the implementation of agreements and the transformation of pledges into concrete actions.

According to these union positions, the new government faces an early test related to the extent of its ability to fulfill previous commitments and improve the professional and social conditions of the workers, at a time when the unions confirm their commitment to dialogue, while keeping the option of protest on the table if the impasse continues.
