Nouakchott –The families of Mauritanian citizens who were detained by the Malian army, while they were crossing Malian territory from Ivory Coast on their way to Mauritania, called on the Mauritanian authorities to intervene urgently to ensure their safety and work to release them as soon as possible.
The detainees’ families reported, in press statements, that their relatives arrived in the Malian capital, Bamako, before leaving for Mauritania, but they were surprised when members of the Malian army took them to an unknown destination, without explaining the reasons for their arrest.
The families called on the Mauritanian authorities to make urgent contacts with the Malian side to reveal the fate of the detainees, ensure their physical safety, and work to return them to the country as soon as possible.
Sidi Ould Hadmin, a relative of the detainees, explained that those concerned were carrying out commercial activity in the city of Bouake in Ivory Coast, and left for Mauritania via Mali, before their pictures appeared on social media sites following their arrest by the Malian army.
The spokesman appealed to President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and all competent authorities to intervene urgently to release the detainees, stressing, according to his statements, that there is no known justification for their arrest.
For her part, Mahjouba Bint Al-Bashir confirmed that the families do not have any information about the whereabouts of the detainees or their conditions, calling on the Mauritanian authorities to take immediate action with their Malian counterparts to ensure their safety and release.
