Riyadh –The Saudi authorities announced the lifting of the ban on the import of live livestock from Mauritania, allowing the resumption of entry of shipments of sheep, goats, cows and camels into the Saudi market, after ensuring that the approved health and veterinary requirements are met.
The decision came in accordance with a directive issued by the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases “Weqa”, which was circulated to livestock importers through the Asharqia Chamber, in preparation for the resumption of import operations in accordance with the procedures in force in the Kingdom.

This decision comes after lifting the health ban that Saudi Arabia had previously imposed on Mauritanian livestock due to fears of the spread of some animal diseases, including Rift Valley fever, foot-and-mouth disease, and peste des petits ruminants, in addition to failure to meet some international health requirements in previous periods.
According to available data, a Saudi technical team conducted a field visit to Mauritania to verify the health status of livestock, before concluding that the reasons for the ban had disappeared and ensuring that veterinary and quarantine procedures conform to the approved standards.
Actors in the livestock sector expect that the resumption of exports to the Saudi market will contribute to enhancing demand for Mauritanian livestock and opening new horizons for exporters, at a time when some observers warn of the possibility that the increase in exports will reflect on prices within the local market if the volume of external demand increases during the coming period.
