Tunisia –On Thursday, the Tunisian Court of Cassation will begin examining the case of “conspiracy against state security,” in which severe sentences were issued against dozens of people, including opposition figures and lawyers, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse
The session sparked criticism from the defense team, due to the short period between the announcement of its date and its holding, which lawyers considered an obstacle to adequate preparation of the defense file.
On Thursday morning, about twenty people gathered in front of the court in solidarity with the prisoners, and raised banners demanding the release of the historical oppositionist Ahmed Najib Al-Shabi, the lawyer Al-Ayachi Al-Hammami, and the leader of the Ennahda movement, Abdelhamid Al-Jalasi, according to the agency’s correspondent.
In November 2025, the Tunisian Court of Appeal upheld the sentences issued against dozens of defendants, which amounted to 45 years in prison.
Among those sentenced are constitutional law professor and opposition figure Johar Ben Mubarak, former minister Ghazi Chaouachi, former official Reda Bel Hajj, and activist Shaima Issa.
On the eve of the session, lawyer and opposition figure Dalila Mosaddeq, Johar bin Mubarak’s sister, criticized the measures taken in the case, considering that from its inception it was nothing but a blatant implementation of political instructions.
For its part, Amnesty International called on President Kais Saied and the Tunisian authorities to cancel the sentences, which it described as “unjust,” and to release the detainees.
The organization also criticized what it described as a mass trial marred by violations of due process, expressing its concern about prison conditions, and noting that the recent successive heat waves exacerbated detention conditions inside poorly ventilated cells.
