Libya refuses to resettle irregular migrants…a unified position of three prominent officials amid escalating controversy

Tripoli –Three prominent Libyan officials renewed their categorical rejection of any arrangements or policies that might be understood as settling irregular migrants within Libyan territory, stressing that this file is linked to national sovereignty and the supreme interests of the state.

This position came during a meeting that included the President of the Supreme Council of State, Muhammad Takala, the Vice-President of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, and the Chairman of the Administrative Control Authority, Abdullah Qadirbuh, in the capital, Tripoli, where the participants stressed the necessity of dealing with the issue of irregular migration according to a comprehensive national vision that takes into account security, demographic, and sovereign considerations.

Officials stressed that addressing the phenomenon requires coordination between various state institutions and developing joint mechanisms to deal with its repercussions, in addition to adopting clear policies to confront the challenges associated with it.

This position comes in light of widespread interaction with reports and information circulating on social media regarding allegations about plans to settle irregular migrants inside Libya, data that has not been confirmed by any official or international body.

In the same context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government affirmed its adherence to its position rejecting the resettlement of irregular immigrants within the country, calling for accuracy in circulating news and avoiding being led by rumors or unconfirmed data.

The Ministry stressed the need to respect national laws and express opinions in peaceful ways, while emphasizing Libya’s commitment to protecting its national security and respecting its international obligations.

For years, Libya has been facing increasing pressure related to the issue of irregular migration, as it is one of the most prominent crossing points towards Europe, at a time when the Libyan authorities confirm that it is a transit country and not a country of settlement for migrants.
