Attention within African political circles is turning to Rabat, following the announcement of the nomination of Libyan MP Youssef Al-Fakhri to head the African Parliament, in light of a regional competition that includes both Algeria and Egypt, for this prominent legislative position within the institutions of the African Union.

According to diplomatic data, Libya is betting on Morocco’s support to enhance the chances of its candidate, given the bilateral relations that unite the two countries, and the role that the Kingdom plays within the African continent at the political and diplomatic levels.

This nomination comes in the context of Libya’s endeavor to restore its presence within the institutions of the African Union, especially after years of relative absence, by pushing political figures towards continental decision-making positions, thus enhancing its participation in formulating African policies.

The Pan-African Parliament, known as the Pan-African Parliament, is one of the main bodies of the African Union, as it carries out legislative and advisory roles, including tracking the implementation of continental policies, promoting the principles of good governance, and consolidating democracy and human rights.

On Wednesday, Representative Youssef Al-Fakhri announced his official candidacy for this position, in a step considered the first of its kind for a Libyan figure since 2011, according to what was confirmed by the Libyan News Agency.

This candidacy also comes in light of a growing Libyan diplomatic movement within the institutions of the African Union, as Libyan representatives participate in the work of the African Parliament, and present strategic files that include sustainable development, artificial intelligence, youth empowerment, digital sovereignty, and food security.

Observers believe that Al-Fakhri’s victory in this position would give Libya an advanced position within the structures of the African Union, and allow it to influence continental decision-making processes, as well as represent the voice of the African peoples at the international level.

In his statement, Al-Fakhri stressed that his candidacy reflects his belief in Libya’s role within the African continent, and his keenness to restore its position within continental institutions, stressing the importance of strengthening joint African cooperation and supporting paths of development and stability.

These developments come in the context of increasing competition between several African countries for leadership positions within the Union, which reflects the importance of these positions in directing continental policies during the next stage.
