Lalla Asmaa’s visit to Gallaudet University in America paves the way for an ambitious project in Morocco for the benefit of the deaf and hard of hearing

Washington – In a remarkable step that reflects the openness of Moroccan diplomacy to areas of humanitarian and social cooperation, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Asmae made an official visit to the American Gallaudet University, a world-leading institution in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing.

The visit, which Moroccan and American officials described as “qualitative,” represented a prominent moment in the course of Moroccan-American relations, as a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Lalla Asmae Foundation and Gallaudet University, with the aim of enhancing exchange and cooperation in the field of inclusive education.

The Minister of Higher Education, Ezzedine El-Midawi, who attended this occasion, explained that this step would pave the way for the establishment of a similar educational institution in Morocco, taking into account the privacy of people with hearing disabilities, and drawing inspiration from the rich American experience.

For her part, the Minister of Solidarity, Social Inclusion and Family, Naima Ben Yahia, considered that the visit reflects the Lalla Asmaa Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the benefit of deaf children and youth, stressing that the new partnership will give them unprecedented opportunities for integration and academic excellence.

The Moroccan Ambassador to Washington, Youssef Al-Omrani, in turn, pointed out that this initiative consolidates the humanitarian aspect of bilateral relations, and is consistent with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which is based on making people the focus of public policies, both within Morocco and in its foreign partnerships.

The President of Gallaudet University, Roberta Cordano, welcomed the Moroccan initiative, expressing her confidence that this partnership will extend to include other African countries, based on the Moroccan experience.

The visit was not without an influential personal touch. A number of Moroccan students at Gallaudet University, including researcher Zahra Kaytoun and student Zakaria Kantouni, expressed their pride in belonging to the Lalla Asmae Foundation, stressing that the signed agreement represents a glimmer of hope for a new generation of deaf youth in Morocco.
