On Thursday, King Mohammed VI oversaw the official start of construction works on the high-speed train line (LGV) linking Kenitra and Marrakesh, over a length of about 430 kilometres, in a new step towards strengthening transport infrastructure and achieving sustainable development goals in Morocco.
This huge project is an extension of the royal vision aimed at developing the national railway network, by providing modern, efficient, and low-carbon means of mass transportation. It comes within the Kingdom’s strategic direction towards developing an integrated and sustainable transportation system that responds to the needs of the Moroccan citizen and is consistent with environmental obligations.
Qualitative shifts in travel time and connectivity between major cities
The new line extends to connect the cities of Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakesh, with direct connections to Rabat and Casablanca airports, in addition to the new stadium in Benslimane. The project is expected to bring about a major shift in travel times, as it will allow travel from Tangier to Rabat in one hour, to Casablanca in one hour and forty minutes, and to Marrakesh in less than three hours, recording a reduction of more than two hours in some distances.
The line will also enable the capital, Rabat, to be connected to Mohammed V International Airport in just 35 minutes, which will enhance the dynamics of movement between major urban hubs and reduce pressure on the roads.
An integrated project to rehabilitate stations and services
The new LGV project includes the completion of a railway line with a speed of up to 350 km/h, in addition to the rehabilitation of major city stations, the construction of new ones for high-speed trains, as well as the development of maintenance centers and structures to provide the technical and railway equipment necessary to operate this modern service.
Enhancing proximity trains to cover the needs of cities
Freeing up the capacity of the traditional network, thanks to the high-speed line, will contribute to the launch of a new service for proximity trains between Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakesh, covering an important part of daily transportation within these cities. This service is one of the structural solutions to meet the challenges of urban transportation, by providing accurate schedules and sustainable, high-quality service.
Extension towards Fez… and continuous connection between the regions
The impact of the project also extends to other cities, as the high-speed train is expected to provide service between Fez and Marrakesh in three hours and forty minutes, by using the regular network between Fez and Kenitra, before moving to the new high-speed line.
This project comes in the context of the Kingdom’s efforts to expand its infrastructure and achieve comprehensive connectivity between cities, which supports the national economy, encourages investment, and improves the quality of life of citizens.
