France and Morocco enhance security cooperation and combat irregular migration

The French Minister of the Interior visitedBruno Rotayo, Moroccan capitalRabatToday, Monday, in a short visit that focused on strengthening security cooperation and immigration.

Rutayo arrived in Rabat on Sunday evening and held a meeting with his Moroccan counterpartAbdel Wafi Laftit. The two ministers discussed important issues, most notably irregular migration, combating organized crime, and drug trafficking.

This visit reflects a clear improvement in relations between the two countries. It came after a previous meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Moroccan officials last October, where he announced an “enhanced partnership” to confront common security challenges.

The talks also focused on the issue of deportation of Moroccans residing in France without residence permits. Paris wants to speed up their return, but faces difficulties due to delays in issuing consular permits.

Rutayo explained before the visit that he seeks to speed up these procedures and reduce their duration, in addition to increasing the number of deportees in coordination with Rabat.

France has reduced the number of visas granted to Moroccans during the years 2021 and 2022. This step aimed to put pressure on Morocco to take back its citizens against whom deportation orders had been issued. This action led to diplomatic tension at the time.

Rutayo’s visit represents a new step towards resolving outstanding issues and building stronger and more effective cooperation between the two sides.
