Italy –The Italian police announced the dismantling of a network suspected of organizing irregular migration operations towards the island of Sardinia, and the arrest of eight Algerian citizens, including three people suspected of involvement in smuggling operations, in addition to the main suspect in leading the network.
According to data reported by Italian security sources, the network was active between Algeria, France, and Italy, and it is believed that it transported at least 60 people, most of them of Algerian nationality, during five crossings towards the southern coast of the island of Sardinia.
According to the Italian police, the investigation that began last February, and was completed in coordination between the police and the Anti-Mafia Department in Cagliari, made it possible to reconstruct the details of five flights that departed from the Algerian city of El Kala towards Sardinia.
The same sources reported that the eight detainees, aged between 25 and 39 years, were placed in pretrial detention pending the completion of judicial procedures.
Investigations indicate that the network was preparing to expand its activity by opening a new smuggling route between the Tunisian island of Galata and the Sardinian coast, as part of what the Italian police described as a project to develop a more profitable route for transporting migrants.
This operation comes in the context of the Italian authorities tightening their investigations into migrant smuggling networks across the Mediterranean, especially those that organize crossing operations towards the Italian islands.
