“Cannes” final riot in Rabat ends with prison sentences… from 3 months to a year for 18 Senegalese fans

Rabat – My Press

Yesterday, Thursday, the Rabat Court of First Instance issued judicial rulings against 18 fans of Senegalese nationality, ranging from three months to one year in effective imprisonment, against the backdrop of the events that accompanied the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, which the Kingdom hosted last January.

These follow-ups came after the arrest of those involved on January 18, following riots during the final match between the Moroccan and Senegalese teams in the capital, Rabat, which ended with the Senegalese team being crowned with the continental title.

According to what was circulated during the trial sessions, the defendants were charged with causing chaos inside and around the stadium, including throwing projectiles, damaging equipment, and storming the field, in addition to acts of violence that targeted members of the public forces as they intervened to restore order.

The Public Prosecution had previously requested penalties of up to two years in prison, considering that the committed acts affected the normal course of the match, especially since some scenes were widely circulated through the media.

In a related context, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his condemnation of the scenes witnessed in the final, describing them as unacceptable, and stressing the importance of respecting the laws regulating sports competitions and ensuring the safety of players and fans.

The last minutes of the match were marked by noticeable tension, especially after a penalty kick was awarded to the Moroccan team in stoppage time, which led to protests inside the field and the state of turmoil extending to some stands, before the relevant authorities intervened to put things back on track and complete the match.

It is noteworthy that Morocco hosted the thirty-fifth edition of the African Cup of Nations with the participation of 24 teams, during the period extending from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, in its second organization of this event after the 1988 edition.
