Algeria bids farewell to the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland… Public anger and demands for Petkovic’s dismissal

Vancouver –The Algerian team exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32, after losing to the Swiss team with two unanswered goals, in the match hosted by the Canadian city of Vancouver. The “Desert Warriors” continued their inability to overcome the European teams in the World Cup, amid a widespread wave of anger from the Algerian fans, who demanded the dismissal of coach Vladimir Petkovic.

The Swiss team decided the match early after Brill Embolo opened the scoring in the tenth minute, before Dan Ndoye added the second goal at the start of the second half, allowing his country to book a ticket to the round of 16, where it will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana.

The Algerian national team did not succeed in providing the expected performance, leaving the tournament in the first elimination stage, and failing to repeat its only achievement when it reached the 16th final of the World Cup in Brazil 2014.

After the end of the match, video clips circulated on social media platforms showing Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic leaving the field amid booing whistles and angry chants from the Algerian fans, who held him responsible for the early elimination.

The fans’ reactions were unanimous in criticizing the coach’s tactical choices, considering that the technical performance lacked solutions, especially after the team conceded two goals as a result of defensive errors described as “catastrophic”, while many demanded his departure and the opening of a new page for rebuilding the team.

Petkovic’s previous statements, in which he talked about his pride in his Swiss nationality before the confrontation, intensified the criticism, as some fans considered it an additional reason for losing confidence in the coach, despite the absence of any evidence linking these statements to the technical performance of the match.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) had indicated, in its analysis of the confrontation, that Petkovic, who supervised the training of the Swiss national team between 2014 and 2021, was unable to invest his knowledge of the opponent for the benefit of the Algerian national team.

With this exclusion, Algeria becomes the sixth Arab team to leave the 2026 World Cup finals, after Tunisia, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, while the Moroccan team remains the only Arab representative to have qualified for the quarter-finals, awaiting the result of the Egyptian team.
