3 foods that promote intestinal health: advice from a specialist doctor

Gut health is crucial, as bowel problems can lead to a variety of symptoms such as stomach pain and bloating, as well as negatively impact sleep. Protein deficiency may also cause muscle loss and weak immunity, which requires attention, especially during the cold and flu season.

In this context, Dr. Karan Rajan, in a video clip on TikTok, revealed three foods that can enhance gut health and help increase protein in the diet:

Nutritional yeast
Nutritional yeast topped the list, as it gives food a cheesy flavor without the need to use animal products. In addition, they contain B vitamins that support the health of the intestinal lining. Dr. Rajan pointed out that Greek yogurt is an ideal choice because it contains a high protein density, as two tablespoons of it contain 8 grams of protein. Yogurt also contains beta-glucan, which enhances the production of anti-inflammatory compounds and encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria.

Greek yogurt
Rajan recommended adding Greek yogurt to the diet, because it contains double the amount of protein compared to regular yogurt. One cup (about 250 grams) can contain 15-20 grams of protein. Besides being a fermented product, yogurt contains live cultures and natural probiotics, which contribute to improved gut health.

Green soybeans
Dr. Rajan suggested including soybeans, also known as edamame beans, in the diet, as they can provide 18 grams of protein in 160 grams of cooked soybeans. Soybeans are also rich in fiber, as the same amount contains 8 grams of fiber, which is more than a quarter of the daily recommended amount. He emphasized that soybeans contain prebiotic fibers and resistant starches, which support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, in addition to containing isoflavones, which are an antioxidant and help reduce inflammation.

By adding these foods to the diet, intestinal health can be enhanced and the level of protein necessary for a healthy body can be increased.
