Tunisia suspends the activities of the “Lawyers Without Borders” organization, and the organization denounces the decision

Tunisia –Lawyers Without Borders announced yesterday, Tuesday, that the Tunisian authorities decided to suspend its activities, in a move that it said took place without official clarifications regarding the background of the decision or its duration.

In a statement published on its official platforms, the organization expressed its rejection of the decision, considering that it constitutes a restriction on civil work and a targeting of independent bodies active in the fields of rights and freedoms and supporting the rule of law.

The organization confirmed that the suspension decision, as it put it, was not based on “a clear legal path or a participatory approach,” stressing its intention to resort to available legal and judicial procedures to challenge it before the competent authorities.

This decision comes in the context of similar measures that Tunisia witnessed during the past months, after the activity of a number of human rights associations and organizations was suspended, including the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights, in addition to other civil associations and bodies.

The country also witnessed, during the recent period, the opening of investigations related to foreign funding files affecting some civil society organizations, in addition to taking decisions to dissolve and freeze the assets of a number of associations, which sparked a wide debate about the status of freedoms and collective action in Tunisia.

A number of human rights activists are following these developments amid calls to ensure respect for freedom of organization and civil action in accordance with applicable laws.
