Today, Wednesday, the Libyan judicial authorities announced the opening of an official investigation into the killing ofSaif al-Islam GaddafiSon of the late Libyan leaderMuammar Gaddafi, who died on Tuesday in circumstances described as mysterious, amid official calls for calm and waiting for the results of the judicial investigations.
The Libyan Public Prosecution reported that a specialized team including forensic doctors and crime scene experts moved to the city of Zintan in the west of the country, where they examined the body of Gaddafi, who for years remained a central and controversial figure in the Libyan political scene, and was considered in previous periods as a potential candidate to inherit his father’s political influence.
The Public Prosecution confirmed, in an official statement, that the death resulted from a gunshot wound, noting that a search procedure had been launched to determine the circumstances of the crime, uncover potential perpetrators, and follow up on them in accordance with the law.
In the first political comment, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council calledMuhammad Al-ManfiVarious political and media actors called for restraint, calling for awaiting the results of the investigation and not being led by speculation or rhetoric that might fuel tension.
The incident brought back to the fore questions about the nature of the operation and the parties that might benefit from its implementation, especially with the circulation of unconfirmed data indicating that the assassination was carried out in a professional manner, after a possible disruption of the surveillance cameras surrounding the scene of the accident.
These developments come in a complex political and security context that Libya is experiencing, which is still divided between the internationally recognized government of national unity in Tripoli, and a parallel authority in the east, centered in Benghazi and enjoying the support of Parliament and military forces led by Field MarshalKhalifa Haftar.
Al-Manfi, who was appointed in 2021 as part of a political road map aimed at unifying institutions, stressed that the authorities will not allow impunity, warning against any inflammatory speeches that would undermine the path of national reconciliation and hinder efforts aimed at organizing free and fair elections.
Pending the completion of investigations, official details have not yet been announced regarding the funeral ceremony for Saif al-Islam Gaddafi or his burial place. Local media reported from those close to him that the option of burial in the city of Bani Walid, known for its historical loyalty to the Gaddafi family, remains on the table.
It is noteworthy that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been the subject of local and international judicial prosecution for years, as heavy sentences were issued against him during the post-2011 period, before he was released in 2017. He later returned to the political forefront by announcing his candidacy for the postponed presidential elections, amid continuing ambiguity around his movements and place of residence until his death was announced.
