The issue of the tribes reaches the European Parliament… A discussion about the right to self-determination embarrasses the Algerian regime

Brussels –EmbraceEuropean ParliamentA remarkable political discussion about the right of the tribal people to self-determination and independence from Algeria, in a move that observers considered an unprecedented development in the internationalization of this issue, which for years remained confined within regional discussions.

The initiative for this discussion came at the invitation of European Representative Nicholas Bay, one of the leaders of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, where the meeting was devoted to presenting positions and discussions about the status of the Kabylie region and the growing demands within it related to the right to self-determination.

A number of activists and researchers interested in minority issues participated in this meeting, including the head of the Kabyle League for Human Rights, Azouou El Kassi, along with academics and civil activists. The interventions focused on what the speakers described as the suffering of the region’s residents from political and economic marginalization within the Algerian state.

The organization of this European debate comes weeks after similar positions expressed by some parliamentarians inCanada, who expressed support for the demands for self-determination in the Kabylie region, which reflects the expansion of international interest in this issue.

Some of the interventions also recalled a political declaration issued in Paris during December 2025 by activists linked to the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie, where they declared at the time what they described as the independence of the Kabylie region, in a symbolic step aimed at drawing international attention to the issue.

The Kabylie region is one of the largest culturally distinct regions in northern Algeria, with an estimated population of millions. Over the past decades, it has witnessed widespread waves of protest demanding recognition ofAmazigh identityAnd with more political and development rights.

Observers believe that the inclusion of the issue of the right of the tribal people to independence in the European Parliament’s discussions represents a new political development that may increase international pressure on Algeria, especially in light of the increasing voices calling for addressing the issue within an international framework.
