The high cost of transportation prompts Mauritania to adopt sea shipping to export watermelons to Europe

Nouakchott –The National Union of Mauritanian Employers announced the adoption of sea transport as an additional logistical option for exporting agricultural products to European markets, in a step that came mainly as a result of the noticeable increase in land transport costs during the recent period.

This trend coincided with the start of the process of shipping 2,100 tons of watermelon through the port of Nouakchott towards the port of Barcelona, with the expected shipment arriving on March 9, as part of efforts to ensure the smooth flow of exports during the peak of the harvest season.

According to available data, the costs of land transportation via trucks have increased significantly during the recent period, moving from about 45 thousand dirhams to approximately 120 thousand dirhams per truck, which prompted exporters to search for logistical alternatives to reduce the cost of export and maintain the competitiveness of agricultural products in European markets.

Professional sources explained that sea transport provides the possibility of transporting larger quantities at a relatively lower cost, in addition to reducing the risks associated with possible delays on land routes.

Despite this new trend, observers confirm that Moroccan trucks have for years been an essential partner in transporting Mauritanian agricultural exports to Europe, especially via land routes linking Mauritania to Morocco and from there to European markets, making them an important part of regional supply chains.

In the same context, work is underway to develop the activity of the Angaku Port into a regular sea line directed at exporting agricultural products, in a step aimed at diversifying logistical means and ensuring the continuity of the flow of exports.

Observers believe that this shift is part of exporters’ adaptation to fluctuations in international transport costs, without eliminating the role played by land transport companies, especially Moroccan ones, in supporting the movement of exports between Nouakchott and European markets during the past years.
