Bamako:On Friday, April 10, 2026, the Republic of Mali announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic,” following an “in-depth analysis” of the Sahara file, taking into account its repercussions on peace and security in the region, according to an official statement by the Malian government.
This announcement was made by the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdallah Diop, following discussions with his Moroccan counterpartNasser BouritaHe stressed that this decision represents an official review of Bamako’s position in light of the regional and international data related to this conflict.
The same source explained that Mali, in addition to withdrawing recognition, expressed its support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco, considering it “a serious, realistic and reliable basis” for reaching a permanent solution, stressing that the option of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty remains “the most realistic” for resolving this conflict.
Bamako also renewed its support for the international process aimed at finding a political solution, under the supervision ofUnited Nations, including the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, as well as Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution No. 2797 issued at the end of last October.
In the same context, the head of financial diplomacy confirmed that this position will be communicated to various regional and international organizations, as well as to accredited diplomatic missions, as part of clarifying his country’s new approach regarding this file.
This development comes in the context of a working visit by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs to Bamako, under royal instructions, as part of a continuing diplomatic dynamic defined by the Moroccan Sahara issue, in light of increasing international support for the autonomy initiative.
This decision is seen as part of a broader trend that reflects the repositioning of a number of African countries towards this file, thus strengthening Morocco’s position at the regional and international levels.
