Libya is making progress regarding the elections despite obstacles and obstacles

Today, Monday, a meeting was held between the Chairman of the High National Elections Commission, Imad Al-Sayeh, and the Deputy UN Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Khoury, where the meeting discussed the latest developments in the second phase of the municipal council elections, which is scheduled to include 63 distributed over various regions of the country as follows: 41 municipalities in the west, 13 municipalities in the east, and 9 municipalities in the south.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Imad Al-Sayeh stressed the importance of continuing international support for the electoral process, noting that the Commission is continuing its work according to a timetable consistent with standards of integrity and transparency, in coordination with the parties associated with this context.
For her part, the Deputy UN Envoy stressed the United Nations’ pledge to support the Commission in performing its tasks related to providing the technical and advisory support necessary for the success of the entitlement, considering it a pivotal measure aimed at establishing stability and strengthening democracy in Libya.
In a statement issued by the Commission, it explained that the two parties studied the technical and logistical preparedness to implement the elections, in addition to the political and technical challenges, in particular with regard to launching international support programs, and this is done under the supervision of the United Nations Development Programme.
In the same context, the Commission will continue today, Monday, the process of distributing voter cards in the relevant municipalities during its second phase, until the process is concluded tomorrow, Tuesday, after prolonging it following a previous postponement that was supposed to end last Thursday.
Moreover, more than 335,000 ballots were distributed until July 19, 2025, even though the Commission suspended the electoral process in 11 municipalities without clarifying the motives or reasons for making this decision, as it merely indicated the possibility of completing it later if the obstacles were removed.
