Late Algerian condemnation of the Gulf attacks… Questions about the timing and confusion in the diplomatic position

My press – Algeria

The condemnation it announced sparkedAlgeriaFor attacks that targeted countriesGulfThere was widespread controversy, due to its late timing compared to other Arab and international positions, which opened the door to questions about the backgrounds of this shift in diplomatic discourse.

The Algerian position was stated by Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf during the Arab League meeting, where he described the attacks as unjustified. However, this statement came after a period of silence and reservation, which observers considered an unjustified delay in a context that requires clarity and speed of interaction.

On the other hand, analysts believe that Algeria’s first position was characterized by ambiguity, as it avoided direct reference to targeting the Gulf states, and was content with calling for calm, which was understood as an undeclared tendency towards supporting certain parties at the expense of Arab solidarity.

Political readings also indicate that this subsequent shift in position reflects an attempt to address the criticism directed at Algeria, especially in light of fears of the repercussions of this on its relations with the Gulf states, whether on the political or economic level.

Observers confirm that this change does not necessarily reflect a radical transformation, but rather falls within a diplomatic repositioning imposed by regional and international pressures, with the continuation of what is described as a policy of “cautious balancing” or “holding the stick from the middle” in dealing with crises.

There were also indications that Algeria was seeking to restore its relations with its Gulf partners, through subsequent diplomatic moves, but these steps were described as insufficient to compensate for the ambiguity that characterized the first position.

In light of these facts, the Algerian position remains a subject of debate, between those who see it as a late correction, and those who consider it a reflection of confusion in determining priorities within foreign policy.
