Geneva.. 40 countries renew their support for the Moroccan Sahara within the Human Rights Council

Geneva –Today, Tuesday, 40 countries renewed their support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over the southern provinces, during the sixty-second session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva, in a new collective position that highlights the continued international support for the Moroccan position.

This position came in a statement read by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Omar Zniber, on behalf of the Supporting Group, during the discussion of the second item on the Council’s agenda.

The signatory states stressed that the interaction of member states with UN human rights mechanisms must take place within a bilateral framework, and in a manner that respects the tasks of the Human Rights Council, far from any use outside its context.

The statement stressed that the Moroccan Sahara issue is being addressed within the framework of the political process sponsored by the United Nations through the Security Council, noting that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco constitutes a serious and realistic basis for reaching a lasting solution to this regional conflict.

The 40 countries also expressed their support for Security Council Resolution No. 2797, which calls for the relaunch of the political process through negotiations between the parties concerned, on the basis of the autonomy initiative, with the aim of reaching a final and agreed-upon political solution.

The group welcomed Morocco’s update of the autonomy proposal and the detailing of its contents, in addition to what it described as the Kingdom’s constructive and voluntary cooperation with United Nations human rights mechanisms, including the High Commissioner and special procedures.

The statement also indicated that the opening of a number of general consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla reflects increasing support for development and investment in the southern regions, and enhances the economic and social dynamism of the region.

The signatory countries concluded their statement by emphasizing that settling this dispute would enhance stability and development in Africa and the Arab world, praising the efforts made in this direction.
