In a remarkable development in the file of conflicts related to land and grazing, the wave of protests against what is described as “unjust grazing” is heading towards the capital, Rabat, where the “Akal Coordination for Defending the Residents’ Right to Land and Wealth” announced the organization ofA protest pauseBefore Parliament on April 26, 2026, after a series of movements in the South and Souss regions.
According to coordination data, this step comes within the framework of a “national escalation” to denounce what it considers “the seizure of the lands and property of local residents,” in the context of the expansion of activities related to intensive grazing and agricultural investments. She points out that several provinces are experiencing, as she puts it, increasing pressure on communal lands, including Sidi Ifni, Tiznit, Taroudant, Chtouka Ait Baha, and Tata, in light of overlapping real estate projects, mining exploitation, and managementForest resources.
The coordination distinguishes between traditional grazing and what it calls “investment grazing,” considering that the introduction of large numbers of livestock into some areas poses environmental and social challenges, including the impact on natural resources and local balances. It also raises concerns related, according to its reports, to the possibility of displacement of some residents and harm to the socio-cultural peculiarities of the areas in question.
In a related context, the Authority criticizes the legal framework regulating pastures, especially Law No. 113.13, considering it “inappropriate” and does not take into account the peculiarities of the local population, as it puts it, while demanding that it be reviewed to ensure balance between the various stakeholders.
The Coordination Committee holds the government responsible for any potential escalation, calling for intervention to protect the population, their lands, and natural resources, most notably the staff system. It also calls for an end to what it describes as “practices that serve the interests of certain lobbies at the expense of local rights.”
On the other hand, this issue remains a subject of divergence of views between various parties, in light of increasing calls to find solutions that balance investment requirements, preservation of rights andNatural resources.
