Morocco –Yesterday, Monday, the Criminal Chamber of First Instance at the Court of Appeal in Fez issued a 15-year prison sentence against a person (M.D.), who was placed in pretrial detention, after being held accountable for acts described as serious that harm the external security of the state, including suspicion of espionage for the benefit of a foreign party, incitement against the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, and insulting a constitutional institution.
The authority ruled, in accordance with the ruling, to convict the accused and punish him with fifteen years in prison with effective imprisonment, after re-adapting the acts in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 190 of the Moroccan Criminal Code, which stipulates penalties ranging from twenty-five years in prison in peacetime for anyone who commits acts that affect the external security of the state, with the possibility of aggravating them in aggravating circumstances.
Direct referral and extensive investigations
The Public Prosecutor had decided to refer the accused directly to the Criminal Chamber, considering that the case was ready for decision. The arrest of the person concerned came last January, before he was referred to investigations initiated by the Central Office for Judicial Investigations of the General Directorate of National Territorial Surveillance, as part of preliminary research into activities described as hostile towards national institutions, with suspicions of connection to foreign intelligence agencies.
“Filming sensitive sites” and suspicions of external links
According to research data, the accused is suspected of being assigned to photograph sites described as sensitive and sending recordings to external parties, which would harm national institutions. The elements of the file also indicated suspicions of connection to the Polisario Front, as well as suspicion of incitement against the Kingdom’s institutional system.
The same sources confirmed that research is still ongoing under the supervision of the King’s Attorney General at the Fez Court of Appeal, where more than 30 permissions have been issued to intercept phone calls, with the aim of identifying possible extensions of the case and monitoring any supposed accomplices.
