Escalating Algerian-Libyan tensions: The drums of war are beating!?

Since the beginning of this June, relations between Algeria and Libya have witnessed a noticeable escalation after the movements of General Khalifa Haftar and the Libyan National Army forces towards areas close to the Algerian border.

Great concerns were raised after video clips were circulated on social networking sites “X” documenting the presence of Libyan military equipment near the border, with questioning comments about the possibility of an armed conflict breaking out between the two countries.

In this context, Dr. Ahmed Al-Dardari, an expert in international relations, considered that the movements of the Libyan forces come as a final warning to the Algerian cabranate regime, noting that Haftar seeks to regain an area of 32 thousand square kilometers, in accordance with previous agreements with the Algerian leadership following the withdrawal of French colonialism.

Al-Dardari pointed out that the roots of this conflict go back to the French colonial period, specifically during the reign of King Idris Al-Senussi, when the Algerian National Liberation Front promised mutual concessions with Libya regarding that region, but the situation changed after Algeria’s independence and fulfillment of previous obligations declined.

At the conclusion of his statement, Dr. Al-Dardari confirmed that Haftar’s forces may move towards escalating the situation towards armed conflict with Algeria, to recover the region adjacent to the borders of the Republic of Niger, which possesses precious natural resources such as gold, silver and lithium.
