Tripoli –The crisis of the comprehensive power outage in Libya sparked a wide wave of controversy, after the National Unity Government headed by Abdul Hamid Dabaiba attributed the causes of the crisis to what it described as “corruption and negligence,” at a time when questions are rising about the responsibility of the executive authorities for the deterioration of the electricity sector.
During a government meeting, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba criticized the performance of the General Electricity Company, considering that mismanagement contributed to the decline in energy production. He also directed criticism at other regulatory bodies, including the Food Control Center, calling for those responsible for the failures to be held accountable.
For his part, the Acting Minister of Interior, Imad Trabelsi, revealed the continuation of fuel smuggling operations across the sea, noting that these activities are carried out with the participation of security and military bodies within the country, stressing that dealing with this phenomenon faces great challenges due to the intertwining of responsibilities.
On the other hand, the General Electricity Company explained that the widespread outage was due to a group of technical and security factors, most notably the decline in gas and fuel supplies, in addition to the damage to production stations as a result of the recent clashes in the city of Zawiya, which led to the loss of hundreds of megawatts of production capacity.
The company added that the security incidents prompted foreign engineers affiliated with an international company to leave the country, stressing that the responsibility for securing them falls on the competent government agencies, which affected the progress of maintenance and operation operations.
Media outlets and activists also circulated documents indicating that the company’s management had, weeks ago, sent official correspondence to the government and the Public Prosecution in which it warned of the possibility of the collapse of the electrical network if the existing imbalances were not addressed.
In the midst of these developments, Al-Dabaiba announced the opening of an investigation into the performance of the General Electricity Company’s management, considering that the decline in production from high levels to a complete outage requires determining responsibilities and taking the necessary measures.
The General Electricity Company teams continue maintenance operations and gradually restore power to the affected areas, coinciding with rising temperatures and increasing demand for energy, amid calls for a comprehensive reform of the infrastructure and enhancing the security of vital facilities.
