Tripoli –Calls continue in Libya to reduce dependence on oil as a main source of income, in conjunction with the country’s efforts to raise its oil production to two million barrels per day, amid demands to accelerate the exploitation of mineral resources and develop productive sectors to ensure a more diversified and sustainable economy.
According to an economic report, Libya possesses the elements that qualify it to enhance its oil production, including large reserves, strategic geographical location, expanding development and production operations, in addition to the increasing interest of international companies in investing in the energy sector.
On the other hand, financial expert Mahmoud Al-Zarrouk Al-Shawish warned against continued over-reliance on oil, considering that any real economic reform remains limited in impact as long as the Libyan economy depends almost entirely on oil revenues.
He explained that diversifying sources of income requires investing in other natural resources, such as gold, iron, uranium, marble, and high-quality sand, in addition to developing the industrial, agricultural, tourism, and service sectors, supporting the digital economy, and benefiting from opportunities to export clean energy to European markets.
The expert stressed that economic reforms should aim to address the structural causes of economic crises, rather than being satisfied with circumstantial solutions, stressing the importance of raising productivity, improving the efficiency of the economy, and addressing the challenges of disguised unemployment and inflation.
Observers believe that diversifying the economy represents one of the most prominent challenges facing Libya, especially in light of the fluctuations witnessed in global energy markets, and the necessity that this imposes to build more stable and sustainable sources of income.
