Nouakchott –The United Nations has begun a new round of consultations with Mauritania as part of the preparations related to the strategic review of the United Nations Mission in the Sahara (MINURSO), months before the expected date for the renewal of the UN mission’s mandate by the UN Security Council during next October.
In this context, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, held discussions in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, with the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, which dealt with cooperation between Mauritania and the United Nations and a number of issues of common interest.
The UN official also held a meeting with the Chief of Staff of the Mauritanian Armed Forces, General Mohamed Fall Al-Rais Al-Rais, where the two sides discussed ways to enhance and develop existing cooperation between Mauritania and the United Nations.
This visit comes after a previous stop that led Lacroix to Morocco, where he was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, as part of the ongoing consultations regarding the future of the MINURSO mission and evaluation of its performance.
These moves fall within the strategic review launched by the UN Security Council during a closed meeting held on April 23, with the aim of evaluating the work of the UN mission and determining priorities for the next phase before presenting the results to Council members next fall.
Mauritania receives special follow-up on this path, given its status as an observer party in the Sahara file, which makes it among the parties included in the ongoing UN consultations prior to discussing the future of the UN mission and renewing its mandate.
A UN mission visited Mauritania last April as part of the preparations related to the meetings dedicated to evaluating the work of the MINURSO mission, in implementation of UN Resolution No. 2797 adopted at the end of last October.
These diplomatic moves come at a time when UN consultations related to the Sahara file continue, amid anticipation of what the strategic review will produce before presenting its conclusions to the UN Security Council in the coming months.
