An armed attack targets the head of the judicial police in front of a correctional center in Tripoli

Tripoli – The head of the judicial police in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, Major General Faraj Juma al-Mabrouk, was injured as a result of gunfire carried out by unidentified gunmen on Thursday evening, in front of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in the New area in Tajoura, located east of the capital.

The Judicial Police Service condemned, in an official statement, the incident that targeted its chief while he was performing his duties, considering that what happened represented “a serious attack on state institutions and a clear violation of the law and customs,” stressing its rejection of any actions that would undermine the prestige of the state or target its officials.

The agency explained that Major General Al-Mabrouk was transferred immediately after the accident occurred to a hospital in Tripoli to receive treatment, where the medical staff confirmed that his health condition was stable and that he was receiving the necessary care, according to what was published on the agency’s official page.

For its part, the Libyan Ministry of Justice condemned what it described as a “cowardly attack,” noting that the injury suffered by the head of the judicial police was described as minor.

The judicial police in Libya is concerned with implementing judicial rulings and decisions, in addition to securing courts and prison institutions, and maintaining order within them.

This incident comes in the context of a complex security and political situation that Libya has witnessed since 2011, in light of the continuing political division and multiple decision-making centers, where power in the country is shared by the national unity government headed by Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba, which is internationally recognized and based in Tripoli, and a parallel authority in the east of the country supported by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
