SetifThe case of the seizure of hundreds of kilograms of meat unfit for consumption in the city of Setif reopened the food safety file, after a supervisory operation revealed quantities that were, according to preliminary investigations, prepared for circulation in the market, which could have exposed the health of consumers to serious risks.
According to data published by Algerian media, the Public Prosecutor at the Setif Court ordered the continuation of the investigation into a butcher active in the Kaaboub neighborhood, after he was arrested during a joint campaign between the health services and the security services.
The operation resulted in the seizure of322 kilograms of red meatUnstamped eggs showed signs of damage, color change, and odor, in addition to large quantities of eggs stored in conditions that did not comply with health safety conditions.
The seriousness of the issue is highlighted by the fact that these products were likely to reach consumers’ tables, which could have led to cases of food poisoning and health damage that could affect large numbers of citizens, especially if they were directed to restaurants or fast food stores that receive large numbers of customers daily.
The Public Prosecution ordered the expansion of the investigation to determine the source of this meat, reveal all parties that were dealing with it, and verify whether there is a network behind the promotion of food products that do not comply with health standards.
The seized quantities were also destroyed in accordance with applicable legal procedures, while judicial investigations continue to determine responsibilities and arrange legal consequences.
This case highlights the importance of intensifying health monitoring of food production and distribution chains, and tightening penalties against anyone proven to be involved in practices that endanger the health of citizens, as complacency in this type of crime not only threatens the safety of individuals, but also undermines confidence in the food control system and markets.
