Algeria reopens its channels with Niger amid the transformations of the Sahel… and Morocco is consolidating its regional position

Algeria – My Press

In an attempt to rearrange its presence within the Sahel region, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received his Nigerian counterpart Abderrahmane Tiani on an official visit to Algeria, which was described as a step to revive bilateral cooperation after months of diplomatic tension that characterized Algeria’s relations with a number of southern neighboring countries.

The visit came in the wake of a regional crisis that erupted following the downing of a Malian drone near the Algerian border in March 2025. This development was followed by a mutual recall of ambassadors between Algeria and Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which revealed an unprecedented rift in its network of relations within the Sahel.

Data indicate that the return of the Algerian ambassador to Niamey nearly a year after he withdrew from consultations reflects an effort to contain the repercussions of that crisis and open a new page of cooperation, especially in the economic and trade aspects, in light of Algeria’s efforts to enhance its exports to deep Africa through the Nigerian portal.

This move comes in a changing regional context, characterized by the restructuring of political and security alliances within the Sahel, as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso moved to strengthen their joint coordination away from traditional frameworks, which reduced the margin of influence that Algeria had been seeking to maintain for years.

On the other hand, Moroccan diplomacy, led by King Mohammed VI, continues to strengthen its presence within the African continent through strategic economic partnerships and structured development projects based on the logic of South-South cooperation, in addition to growing international support for the autonomy initiative in the southern provinces, and the opening of African consulates in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.

Observers believe that the Algerian move towards Niamey is also understood in the context of an increasing regional competition for influence within Africa, especially in light of the current geopolitical transformations and the decline of traditional roles in favor of development approaches based on investment and balanced partnership, a model that has strengthened Rabat’s position as a reliable partner within the continent.

While Algeria seeks to reposition itself in the south after a period of diplomatic apathy, Morocco continues to consolidate its continental presence with a long-term strategic vision, which gives it a clear advantage in the balance of influence within Africa, in light of a regional environment that is witnessing rapid transformations and a redrawing of the equations of influence.
