AlgeriaAlgeria and Spain announced, on Monday, the opening of a new page in their bilateral relations after years of diplomatic tension, following discussions between Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the Mouradia Palace, which focused on strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy, investment and security, in addition to coordination on regional and international issues.
President Tebboune confirmed, during a joint press conference, that Sanchez’s visit reflects a joint political will to revitalize bilateral relations and create conditions for the success of the eighth session of the Algerian-Spanish high-level meeting expected to be held next October, in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries.
The Algerian President explained that the talks dealt with energy and renewable energies issues, investment, trade exchange, and security, judicial and consular cooperation, with an agreement to expand the economic partnership and encourage businessmen to launch new projects and investments.
On the economic side, Tebboune called on Spain to play a greater role within the European Union in order to reactivate the Algerian-European Partnership Council and enhance the balance in economic relations between Algeria and the European Union, praising at the same time the existing cooperation in the field of energy, and stressing his country’s readiness to develop joint projects in the renewable energies sector.
The Algerian President also stressed the importance of strengthening judicial cooperation, especially in anti-corruption files and recovering stolen funds, calling for accelerating the implementation of requests for mutual judicial assistance, and valuing the current level of cooperation between the two countries in this field.
The discussions also included issues of irregular migration, human trafficking, and cross-border organized crime, as the two parties agreed to continue security coordination and facilitate the movement of people.
At the regional level, the two sides discussed developments in the situation in the Middle East, the Gulf region, the Sahel, Libya, the Palestinian issue, and the Sahara issue, with an emphasis on supporting political solutions, dialogue, and respect for international law and United Nations resolutions.
Pedro Sanchez’s visit to Algeria is the first since the diplomatic crisis that broke out in 2022, which reflects a common desire to return relations to their normal course and open a new phase of political and economic cooperation between the two countries.
