The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, announced that the possibility of returning to organizing the African Cup of Nations every two years is subject to review, during the federation’s strategy conference held in Cape Verde, in a development that reopens the discussion regarding the future of the continental competition, after a previous announcement of the adoption of a new system stipulating that it be held every four years, starting from the stage after the 2028 edition.

Motsepe said, during the conference, that the federation is studying the possibility of returning to organizing the tournament every two years, stressing that the issue is still under review, without announcing a final decision regarding changing the approved calendar.

In December 2025, CAF announced a move towards moving to a system of holding the African Cup of Nations every four years after the 2028 edition, as part of changes aimed at reorganizing the agenda of African international competitions. The new statement means that this approach has become subject to review, but the final version of the next timetable has not yet become clear.

Regarding the 2027 edition, Motsepe reiterated the Federation’s commitment to hosting Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for the tournament, indicating that the three countries remain the approved choice for CAF to organize the competition, despite reports that raised questions about the pace of preparing infrastructure, especially in Kenya.

The 2027 African Cup of Nations is scheduled to start on June 19, with the final match taking place on July 17, according to the dates announced by the Confederation of African Football. This will be the first edition to be hosted jointly by three countries, with the tournament returning to the East African region for the first time since the Ethiopian edition in 1976.

Organizing the tournament on its scheduled date, in addition to deciding the periodicity of its holding in the future, remains one of the most prominent files before CAF, awaiting the issuance of official decisions clarifying whether the federation will permanently return to the system it has historically adopted, which is based on organizing the competition every two years.
