Tunisia –The Tunisian authorities opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of a food poisoning accident that affected members of one family in the delegation of Meknassi in the state of Sidi Bouzid, resulting in the death of two people and the admission of seven others to the intensive care unit.
According to data from the health authorities, nine members of the family showed symptoms of severe poisoning after eating a family meal that included a number of traditional foods associated with Eid al-Adha, which required their transfer to health institutions to receive the necessary first aid.
Health sector officials reported that two people died as a result of their health condition deteriorating, while seven injured people are undergoing medical observation and treatment in the hospital, amid continuous monitoring of their health condition.
As part of the ongoing investigations, the specialized teams removed samples of food suspected of being linked to the accident, in addition to subjecting the injured to the necessary laboratory examinations and analyses, while the bodies of the two victims were transferred to forensic medicine to complete the legal and medical procedures.
Health authorities confirmed that the causes of poisoning have not yet been determined, and that all hypotheses remain under study until the final results of laboratory analyzes and judicial investigations are issued.
This incident coincides with the rise in temperatures during the current period, conditions that usually witness an increase in the risks of food poisoning related to the methods of preserving and preparing some quickly perishable materials, especially during family occasions and holidays.
