Tunisia –The General Department of Forests in Tunisia revealed that about 95% of forest fires recorded in the country are due to human causes, stressing that some of them are the result of negligence and ignorance, while others turn out to be intentional, with investigations continuing and a number of suspects being arrested.
He explainedKahiya Director of Forest ProtectionIn the General Administration of Forests, Al-Arusi Al-Rubaie, in a statement to national radio, said that the forestry services were able to arrest a number of violators in connection with the fires, while research is still ongoing to uncover all those involved.
The official pointed out that the fires that occurred in several regions during the summer of 2026 caused the destruction of about 12,000 hectares of forests, pointing out that nearly a thousand field interventions were recorded, including 100 interventions during the last fifteen days only.
Al-Rubaie added that the period extending until July 10 witnessed the recording of about 900 fires, most of which were in grain farms and did not cause significant damage, while the fires recorded after this date caused widespread losses that affected the forest cover.
The official stressed the necessity of separating agricultural lands from forests, considering that the presence of farms within forested areas contributes to accelerating the spread of fires and increases the difficulty of controlling them.
