Tunisia.. Protests demanding the deportation of irregular immigrants

Tunisia –On Saturday, dozens of protesters organized a protest in front of the government headquarters in the capital, Tunis, to demand the deportation of irregular migrants coming from sub-Saharan African countries.

Participants in the protest, which was organized in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, raised slogans rejecting what they described as “settlement and naturalization,” stressing the need to take urgent measures to limit the increasing numbers of irregular immigrants inside the country.

These movements came after calls were circulated on social media urging the organization of protests to demand the deportation of immigrants who entered Tunisian territory illegally.

During the protest, a number of activists and civil activists called on the Tunisian authorities to speed up deportations and tighten border controls, considering that the worsening phenomenon of irregular migration poses increasing social and security challenges.

On the other hand, the Tunisian authorities continue to periodically announce the thwarting of attempts at clandestine migration towards European coasts, in addition to the arrest of migrants of various African nationalities, in light of growing European pressure on Tunisia to strengthen control of its coasts and limit migration flows towards Europe.

In 2023, the European Union announced the allocation of financial support to Tunisia within the framework of a cooperation agreement that includes immigration, border control and economic development.

Previous Tunisian official data indicate that significant numbers of irregular migrants are concentrated in some eastern regions of the country, without comprehensive official statistics on the total number of migrants inside Tunisia.
