Tunisia has recorded 396 fires since May 2026, damaging about 190 hectares of crops and forests.

The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries revealed that 396 fires had been recorded in various parts of the country since the beginning of May 2026, causing damage to about 190 hectares of agricultural and forest lands, amid warnings of increased risks with the arrival of the peak of the summer season.

This came during a working session supervised by the Minister of Agriculture, Ezzedine Ben Sheikh, devoted to assessing the general situation of the fires and following up on the extent of the recorded damage, in addition to determining the readiness of the intervention teams and the logistical means adopted to confront the fires.

Official data showed that the fires destroyed about 147 hectares of wheat and barley crops, and 43 hectares of forests and forest trees, in addition to other damage that included 15 hectares of grains and 5 hectares of legumes, while the Ministry confirmed that most of the fires remained limited thanks to the speed of intervention and coordination between the various concerned departments.

The General Department of Forestry explained that the electronic platform for monitoring fires contributed to monitoring incidents and responding quickly to them, in addition to adopting joint patrols with the National Guard and using drones to enhance surveillance and prevention.

The Minister of Agriculture stressed the need to raise the level of preparedness during the coming weeks, while intensifying monitoring and preemption operations and providing the necessary human and logistical resources, especially in light of the rising temperatures and the increasing risk of fire outbreaks during the summer.
