Tunisia –The leakage of quantities of water from the Malak Dam in the state of Kef, as a result of a technical defect at the level of one of the dam’s gates, caused a rise in the level of the Malak Valley in the state of Jendouba, with damage recorded that was mainly limited to agricultural lands adjacent to the valley’s course, according to official data.
The Regional Committee for Disaster Prevention, Confrontation, and Rescue Organization in the state of Jendouba confirmed that the situation does not pose a threat to the residents or their homes, explaining that the course of Wadi Medjerda is capable of absorbing the quantities flowing towards Bou Salem, all the way to the state of Beja.
The committee reported that the current damage consisted of submerging and destroying parts of agricultural lands close to the valley’s course, without recording human losses or direct threats to residential areas, while continuing to monitor the development of the water situation on the ground.
Civil Protection and the Ministry of Agriculture had previously announced the technical failure of the dam, which led to the flow of large amounts of water into the valley, which required urgent calls for farmers to move pumps and livestock and move agricultural equipment away from the water stream to avoid worsening losses.
The technical teams of the General Administration of Dams and Major Water Works continue to monitor the situation in coordination with the regional authorities, at a time when Civil Protection stressed the necessity of adhering to precautionary measures and avoiding approaching the valley’s course until the situation stabilizes.
