The water crisis in Tunisia worsens with the beginning of summer.. 423 reports of supply interruptions and disturbances

Tunisia –The Tunisian Water Observatory recorded 423 reports related to drinking water supply services during the month of June 2026, an indication of the worsening pressures the sector is witnessing with the start of the summer season and the rise in demand for water.

Observatory data showed that 374 reports, or more than 88% of the total notifications, concerned interruptions and unannounced disturbances in the distribution of drinking water in various states of the country, which reflects the continuing challenges associated with ensuring regular supply.

The state of Sousse topped the list of states with the most reported cases with 43 cases, followed by Jendouba with 42 reports, then Ben Arous with 38, while 23 protest movements related to the water crisis were also monitored, and 20 cases of leakage in distribution networks, in addition to 6 reports regarding the quality of the water and its unsuitability for drinking.

According to the observatory, the number of notifications increased significantly with the beginning of the summer, after reaching 201 reports in January, 317 in February, 204 in March, and 224 in April, reaching 423 reports in June, which is attributed to rising temperatures and increased seasonal water consumption.

The data also showed that sudden outages and supply disruptions constituted more than 80% of the total notifications recorded during the first half of 2026, at a time when distribution networks continue to record cases of leakage that reflect the challenges of maintaining water infrastructure.

This increase in reports comes in light of increasing concerns about the impact of heat waves on the stability of water supply during the summer months, especially in areas that are witnessing increasing pressure on water resources.
