Nouakchott –Five gold prospectors died of thirst in the desert of northern Mauritania, after their vehicle broke down in a remote area in Tiris Zemmour state, while search teams were able to rescue six others, and the search for a missing person continues.
The victims were part of a group of 12 prospectors who were on board a four-wheel-drive vehicle in the “Mak Kalb” area, while returning from the “Al-Foula” area for civil prospecting, towards the city of Zouerate, the capital of the state, about 780 kilometers north of Nouakchott.
According to local sources, the car broke down in a desert area, before the group members dispersed in search of help. Rescue teams found six of them near the vehicle and they were in good health, while the bodies of five others were found in locations close to the vehicle, after they died while trying to call for help.
Search operations are still continuing to find the missing prospector and determine his fate.
Death incidents occur frequently in areas of private gold prospecting in northern Mauritania, where prospectors face multiple dangers, including thirst in vast desert areas and the collapse of wells and exploration sites.
The incident once again reveals the danger of working in remote excavation areas, which extend over wide distances and in some locations lack means of rescue and rapid supply.
